Sounded good at the time....

Ever since we finished our Everything Room, I've loved the aqua blue desk. I think it keeps the room from being boring since the rest is on the neutral side.

We knew we wanted to replace our back door. Not only was it ugly but it was beginning to rot at the bottom and we could see light through.

So we installed this beautiful 10 light wood door and then I painted it blue to match the computer desk I loved so much. So.....what do you think? I think I hate it.....

My goal was to bring in another touch of the aqua but it seems too much. I antiqued the desk but not the door. So I'm wondering if I should try that and see if I'm happier with it. As of right now I'm thisclose to taking some white semi-gloss to it.

Give me your honest opinions, I can take it. Right now I'm ready to file this under "Sounded like a good idea at the time but turned into a decorating disaster" folder.

Hi, Michelle! Well, I think I'm going to make the decision harder for you by telling you that I really love the blue door {the color and the style!}! I think it adds a touch of color to the room and it's such a pretty shade. I would try antiquing it first to see if you like it any better, but if you still don't like it, then you can always change it. I'm struggling, too, with the french doors in my kitchen - I don't know if I want to leave them white or paint them red! I feel for you!

I agree, the blue door looks wonderful! I love that color though, but if your not happy with it try to antique it a bit.

Black. Fo shizzle. Let the desk have it's solo ;)

I love the color. I agree that antiquing it may give you what you're looking for!!!

I guess I am the one with a totally different opinion. I would paint it white like the trim. I love the aqua desk, but I would just bring in accessories in very small doses of the aqua elsewhere in the room. My opinion is that the desk is a focal point and the door distracts from it. Just my opinion. I love the room. Hugs, Marty

Keep the door as is, just antique it like the desk. I love, love the color! This is my opinion of course, you are the one that has to be happy with it.:)

Thank you, Marty! Great minds think alike.

Darlene said...

I'm going with Marty on this one. I say since you have already painted it though try the antiquing and then make a decision.♥

It's really hard to tell without standing right there in the room (can I come over for coffee? ;)) But from the picture, I say keep it! It's an added pop of color and aqua looks so good in that room. I suggest antiquing it like the desk to see how you like it. But it really looks great. In the end, you have to go with your gut, though. It's your home and you have to be happy with it.

I love the aqua on the door. A door as nice as that one deserves to stand out!
That is such a great room!

Hi Michelle...

Well my friend, I just adore your new "everything room"! It has a wonderful feel to it...and that little aqua desk is fabulous!!!

It's really hard for me to give an opinion simply based on seeing only the door in the photo! I'm with Nancy, can I come over for coffee? Hehe! I love the aqua color of the door though...it's unique and I like that! I think that antiquing the door like you did with your desk might be the next step? Then if you're still not loving it...change the color! Hmmm...but I do like the aqua...beautiful color!!! Wishing you the best with your design decisions...have fun, my friend!

Warmest wishes,
Chari

Well, I"m with Marty and Darlene...try antiquing it to see if that satisfies you, but if not, paint it white like the trim and hang wreath or door basket painted aqua, or just accessorize more with the aqua.....love the color, just not on the door. I think it needs to match the trim....jmho...

I love it! My idea would be to add a third piece of the blue somewhere in the room. They always say odds are more pleasing to the eye. Not that I know...

Eileen said...

Try antiquing it first. If you don't love it, then go for the white.
In my opinion, something about all the panes of glass gives the door more of a garden door feel or french door feel, and I think those look better when more neutral. Maybe if your back door was more like your old door the blue would look like it fits in more.
I can't put my finger on it, but there is something odd-looking about that color on the door and yet it looks so much at home on the desk!
Good luck!
All the best,
Eileen

You want my honest opinion? Put down that paint brush right this instant Missy! Back away from the gorgeous aqua door and go find something else to paint. And since you won't be busy painting maybe you'll have time to share that paint color with me? Pretty please? Jen

I like it! Maybe you could live with it awhile longer and see if you REALLY want to change it? I would add a pillow in that tone
or same color to bring it around the room. Of course I do not live there but I would love to have that room to relax in since I seem to like all of it.
Thanks, JolieAnne

I vote with Marty and Darlene too ... if you don't like it antiqued, you can go for a different color. Enjoy the rest of your week!

Well, I myself would paint it white. I had the same problem with a piece of furniture that I painted recently. First I decided to paint it about the same color that your door is now, for the same reason you had, to add some color to the room. But when it was done, I thought it was just too much. So I painted it white. Ahhh, much better. But then I really like the look of white painted furniture and cabinets. I had the same problem in a bathroom where I started out painting the cabinets a blue grey color. They're white now. So I know how you feel. My advice would be that if you really don't like the blue now, you probably never will really like it. You may "get used to it", but you might not ever really like it. So I'd say go ahead and paint it white and see if it makes you feel better. Good luck. :)

I like it the color that you painted it. Maybe when you antique it, it will look better to you. That is a beautiful door! I love your 'everything' room too.

I think you are crazy to not like it! I LOVE it...try antiquing it before you decide...leave it for a couple days and maybe it will grow on you!

Yikes! I love the blue door, but then again I painted the inside of my front door black, and kept the trim white. I love how the blue, and my black, pop a bit. Not boring and not over the top. It is an interesting door with the ten lights and the colour goes with that in my opinion. I especially like the change of hardware. But, it is your door and you have to live with it as others have stated. If you go black, I strongly suggest just the door, not the trim. Keep the trim white (I learned this lesson).

Christina said...

I think I love it. The color looks fabulous. It is hard though if you don't love something to live with it. MMmmm, but it is really beautiful. Maybe like many others have said, try to antique it.

Tammy said...

I'd paint it white and let the desk be center of attention as you intended. You could always hang a cool wreath of dried neutrals on the door and hang it with a blue ribbon to tie in the desk. That way the blue is carried around but not so in your face as it is on the door. Love the room - very calming.

I think the aqua door is superb. :) It's cheery and the light might make the aqua less aqua when it's sunny outside. who knows, but i think it's fab.

the best part is if it does start to annoy you (more than it is right now), you can always paint over it! :)

I think your Everything Room is lovely.

I vote white, but I'm going through a white obsession which is on the heels of my chic black obsession. :-)

Hi Michelle :)

....Hmmm..... Personally I like it. I think you should leave it be (if you haven't already painted it) and come back to it. Sometimes it takes a week or more to decide. Our front door sat the way it came for almost a month before I went to paint it and I ended up keeping the aqua. So, I say live with it for a while :)

Well, I would NOT call it a disaster, but I don't know if I like it, either.

It's really nice, don't get me wrong - I love the color, love the door itself, but it's hard for me to picture the whole room together.

I would bet money, though, that it adds a bit more balance to the room. I say keep it... leave it for a month, then decide. :-)

And disterssing it may add to it - give it a shot!

I think I like it...but I am partial to painted doors. I've only ever had red and black ones, but the Tiffany blue is really pretty.

Let it grow on you for a little while. I always second guess my dramatic decorating decisions and end up liking them later. What I regret more is being boring and wishing I added color...

Try the antiquing and see how you feel. Maybe you're feeling overwhelmed because the door and the color are new?

Just my two cents! :)

I agree leave it blue for a bit, go ahead and antique it, I think it would go better with the desk that way because it would tone down the blue some. How about some curtains? Are you going to put anything sheer on the door? That may help too.

Oh, please keep it. Add the same effect as the desk if you think it would help you like it better. I just love it. Love that it stands out in the room, Love the pop of color. Simple put I think its perfect.

I think it looks fine from what I can see in the picture, and the glass breaks it up. If it was a solid door, then I think it might be too much. Live with it for a few days before you do any more work to it, but I think it looks really cute! :)

Amy said...

I say go back to white, but add a blue bit of whimsy to it....a little painted design around the knob and lock, perhaps?

I think it looks great ..really! What I think is that you are not use to it and in a bit of shock. Live with it for a day or two more and see if it grows on ya. If not no worries...paints cheap~ Good luck!

Kendra@My Insanity said...

I kind of like how the blue desk just pops. What if you tried a different color like a muted red. I love red and aqua together. Then it wouldn't be too matchy-matchy. I'm not sure there is a wrong answer here. Just depends on what you are going for.

Hi Michelle! I really like your door,is it old?Anyway,I would probably go with a neutral but then shop for some awesome fabric to make a topper that would compliment the blue desk.I liked the fabric you where considering for a rocker in your livingroom.

Decisions, decisions! I think maybe wait a few days to see if continues to grow on you...My steel doors are gonna get a fresh coat of white one day!

House Elf said...

I would file it under your "sounded good at the time" lol
I think it distracts from the desk, and is too much aqua. I vote for white. This would allow the outside to be more of a 'view' and adding small touches of the aqua into the room would be nice without going too far into a 'theme' or being 'match-y'. Best of luck on your next step!

Tootsie said...

I think the aqua does not do the beautiful door justice...it robs from the pretty windows...go for the cream color....maybe listen to twice remembered if you aren't afraid of a little extra work...but I still think that you should showcase the windows...not the color!
it is a beautiful door!

So how ya feeling about that door today?

Lorie said...

It definitely doesn't have the same effect as the desk. I vote to try black! You have enough black accent in the room that I think it might work!

Maybe instead of going through the hassle of actually painting it, get a long strip of black butcher paper, cut out the squares to let the light of the window through and hang it over the door for a day.

The room is gorgeous though!

Hi! I'm new to your blog, but I love what you've done. From one person who paints things and "hates it" to another, I think you should trust your first impression. You probably won't like it better if you antique it. I would try adding your cute blue in tinier doses, and like someone earlier said, let the desk have the limelight. I think a tiny wreath hung with a blue ribbon, or even adding a blue detail to your lampshade would probably do the trick. Hopefully you find this helpful. Love the room. :)

I love love the door! I so want to replace my front door, but I keep getting stopped by hubby. When we bought the house it was brand new. But not so cute. I keep wanting to paint it but I can't decisde on a color. I love your door on display in the everything room. In our old house we had a door just like that I painted red and oh so loved it. When we moved I drove past the house and the owners put an ugly new door up. I was so sad I totally would have taken the door with me.

Hello Michelle - well, you know how much I adore that aqua since I am a copy cat and painted my desk the same shade as yours! I ended up painting Emma's desk the same too and it added more color to the room which I like. So...I say keep the aqua door and maybe do a 3rd item in the room too like Stacey's suggested. Can't wait to see what you decide!
